ace in the hole

Meaning: A hidden but effective means of winning a conflict.

Example: “Her fluency in Japanese was her ace in the hole during the interview.”

Origin: From stud poker, where a player's "hole" card is dealt face down, hidden from the others. An ace kept there was a secret advantage. The phrase is American from the early 20th century.
