English is a British phrase; the popular story says pilots used it for loops that came out lopsided, but that's not proven. Finnish goes into the forest, mennä metsään, the easiest place in Finland to get lost.
Portuguese ends up with its donkeys in the water, dar com os burros n'água, a whole load lost crossing a river. Spanish says things came badly dealt, venir mal dadas, like a poor hand of cards.
