Example: “Quand il a encore oublié de payer sa part, j'ai senti la moutarde me monter au nez.” — When he forgot to pay his share again, I felt myself getting angry.

English equivalent: To get hot under the collar

Origin: Strong mustard goes straight to the nose in a burning, prickling rush, and anger is felt as the same sudden heat rising to the face. The Académie française noted in 1762 that strong mustard prend au nez (catches you in the nose), and in 1787 the grammarian Féraud recorded the figurative la moutarde lui monte au nez: he is starting to lose his temper.
