Meaning: Something that appears to have great value but is in fact a cheap imitation.
Example: “The get-rich-quick scheme turned out to be fool's gold.”
Origin: Iron pyrite, a common mineral with a brassy, golden shine, fooled inexperienced prospectors into thinking they had struck gold. The name became common during the 19th-century American gold rushes.
