Meaning: Something that one cannot have.
Example: “Once his parents banned video games, they became forbidden fruit.”
Origin: From the Book of Genesis, where God forbids Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and they eat its fruit anyway. The phrase for any tempting thing one should not have is found in English from the 17th century.
