“Out of one's league”in other languages
Something desirable that you'll never get.
English
Japanese
Korean
Same idea, different pictures
Japanese and Korean show it as something you can see but never have: a flower on a high peak, takane no hana, and a rice cake in a painting, 그림의 떡, which looks delicious but can't be eaten.
English has two that lean differently. Out of one's league is about a person too attractive or a thing too expensive for you. Pie in the sky is an unrealistic hope; it comes from a 1911 song by the labor activist Joe Hill, mocking the promise of rewards in heaven.
