“Out of the blue”in other languages
Suddenly and unexpectedly.
English
French
Ukrainian
Same idea, different pictures
English is short for a bolt out of the blue, lightning from a clear sky. Ukrainian has snow fall on your head from a roof, як сніг на голову.
French does it without shouting a warning, sans crier gare, or de but en blanc, from archery and gunnery, where you fired straight from the mound at the white of the target. German says from one day to the next, von einem Tag auf den anderen.
