English and French come from ships. High and dry is a boat stranded on the beach at low tide. French en rade is a ship left waiting at anchor outside the harbor, neither at sea nor in port.
Spanish is left at the stockade, dejar en la estacada, alone behind the wooden fence while everyone else has gone.
