English and French both call on a cow. Holy cow! is an American way of swearing without swearing, made famous by baseball commentators. French la vache ! can mean surprise, or be said of someone mean, like a cow that kicks without warning.

Polish invokes the wounds of a rooster, rany koguta, a playful stand-in for a more serious oath.
