Literally: To write someone a chicken
Example: “Pendant la guerre, il écrivait un poulet à sa fiancée chaque dimanche.” — During the war, he wrote his fiancée a love letter every Sunday.
Origin: A billet-doux was folded with two corners drawn out to a point, which left it looking like a bird with wings. The shape named the letter, and the letter kept the name after the folding stopped.
