Origin: Buttare is also used of plants putting out shoots. The Hoepli dictionary explains that vedere come butta first meant checking how a plant's shoots were growing, and figuratively seeing how a situation is developing before deciding what to do. Come butta? is now colloquial for "how's it going?"
