German and Finnish give up the spoon: den Löffel abgeben, heittää lusikka nurkkaan, throw the spoon in the corner. Whoever no longer eats no longer needs one.
English has kicked the bucket since at least 1785; nobody knows which bucket. Russian plays in the box, сыграть в ящик, meaning the coffin, and German crosses the Jordan, über den Jordan gehen, the river on the way to the Promised Land. French passes its weapon to the left, passer l'arme à gauche, an old military phrase whose origin is still argued over.
