“Have a bone to pick with someone”in other languages
Have a complaint you want to sort out with someone.
English
Dutch
French
Norwegian
Same idea, different pictures
Each language makes the quarrel a small job two people have to finish together: a bone to pick clean in English, a little apple to peel in Dutch, a hen to pluck in Norwegian. The task is the excuse; the argument is what you sit down for.
French needs a bit of history. A maille was the smallest medieval coin, and partir here means “to divide”, not “to leave”. Two people who must split a single coin that can't be split are bound to fall out.
