Meaning: The perfect retort that arrives only after you have left.
Literally: Staircase wit
Example: “C'est dans le métro que j'ai trouvé la réplique parfaite : l'esprit de l'escalier.” — It was on the subway that I thought of the perfect comeback: too late, as always.
Origin: Coined by Diderot in Paradoxe sur le comédien (The Paradox of the Actor), describing being so disconcerted at dinner that the reply came only at the bottom of the stairs on the way out. German borrowed the idea as Treppenwitz; English never found a phrase and uses the French.
