English comes from Britain's Riot Act of 1714, which an official had to read aloud to a crowd before ordering it to disperse. French gives someone a soap, passer un savon, a good scrubbing.
German turns them into a snail, jemanden zur Schnecke machen, shrinking them down to size. Icelandic takes them onto the bone, að taka einhvern á beinið.
